4. Virtual Assistant

More and more people are taking advantage of having a virtual assistant online. Being a virtual assistant can be quite varied. It might mean sorting and replying to email, tweeting, doing internet research or writing documents, among many other tasks. There are many sites where you can find employers or advertise your services such as Freelancer.com.

✭✭✭  If using an online service such as Freelancer, build up your profile initially by doing a few small jobs for cheap where you can get some good feedback before applying for longer, better paid jobs.

5. Affiliate Marketing

Affiliate marketing is basically where you refer someone to somewhere else to buy a product or a service. For example, you may refer someone to Amazon to buy some eBooks, personal care products, or apparel. If they buy anything during that visit, then you get a percentage of the profits.  This can be anywhere from 2% to 12% of the cart total which makes for some nice extra cash for your time.

To get started in affiliate marketing, you need to choose a platform to basically sell these goods and services. Many people start with a blog or a website where you can do things like product reviews that then link to that product in Amazon. It is also possible to use platforms such as Facebook to do affiliate marketing. Basically anywhere you can put a website link to the product or service that you are an affiliate for, then you can use that to do affiliate marketing.

An example is Melbourne Family.

✭✭✭ You do not need a big audience to start earning money from affiliate marketing. I have started earning money online with as little as 100 website hits a month.

6. Sell Jewelery

Thanks to sites such as Etsy and eBay, it is now very easy to start online money making by selling jewellery. For people who are crafty, this is a great option, but it is also a valid choice for people who want to act as a middle man selling other people’s jewellery for extra income. Another great option, and a way to avoid the fees of selling your jewelery on other sites, is to simply start a Facebook page to start selling your items. Read some more of our tips and how to get started now.

7. Web Design

If you are at all creative or know how to make good images, logos, banners, pins or websites, then web design can be a quick and easy way to get started working online for full time or extra income. There are many different ways to connect with potential clients. For example, using freelancing sites, such as Upwork, or design sites, such as 99 Designs.

✭✭✭  If you have no professional experience and are new to web design tools, you could get started by using Canva and advertising on Fiverr to make pins for Pinterest.

8. Data Entry

Data entry is one of the easiest ways to earn money online as it takes no existing skillset. If you are not quick at entering data, you soon will be! However, data entry can often be performed by anyone anywhere with a good internet connection. You will have to differentiate yourself based on accuracy and dependability to keep your pay competitive. You can find jobs on freelancing sites or traditional job websites. Read more about how to get started now in our guide.

✭✭✭  Ask friends, family and local businesses if they know of any data entry jobs. If you can find work with an Australian based company, the pay is likely to be a lot better.

9. Programming

If you have any programming skills, than this could be the best way to make money for you. Programming is an easy job to transition from the regular workforce to working online. Even if you don’t have commercial experience, there are lots of small jobs available using systems like WordPress or helping people with their websites.

✭✭✭  If you do not have much experience, start by bidding for small jobs on freelancing platforms to grow both your knowledge and experience while still earning some money.

10. Sell Items on Amazon

When many people think about selling items on Amazon, they think about setting up their own product or starting a shop. However, there are many different ways to make money online on Amazon and a popular and lucrative way is through market arbitrage. Basically, you find products that you can buy for cheaper prices than what they sell for on Amazon. You then buy them, list them on Amazon and ship them off to an Amazon fulfillment centre. Amazon then handles any orders and any customer service around this. This is a great guide which explains all about what it is and how to go about it.

✭✭✭  If you have a smart phone, start by getting an app (there are many) which will scan bar codes of items and tell you how much they sell for on Amazon. This is an easy way to find items that have the possibility for good profit margins.

11. Sell Items on eBay

You can do a similar thing to what is described above on eBay. A popular choice is to order an item in bulk from China, such as a toy,  children’s clothing or iPhone cover, then sell it for a more expensive price on eBay. Many items can be bought more cheaply in bulk and Australian customers often have a greater trust for sellers that are Australian. They can also get the items more quickly than if they ordered the items from China themselves.

✭✭✭  Be sure to do some internet research into what is already selling on eBay and what people pay to ensure you pick a profitable product. It can be good to start small to test the waters. Also remember to take into account the cost of postage when selling.

12. Link Selling – own Sites

Another way of how to make money online is to sell links on sites that you own. Many bloggers and website owners earn money taking this route. Basically, companies want lots of links to their sites as this tells Google that their site is a quality site and then they rank higher in Google searches. People try to game this system by buying links on other sites. Usually it is very quick and easy to add a link to your sites for someone. However, you do run the risk in that if Google finds out, your own sites can be penalised in Google search rankings.

✭✭✭  The higher the domain authority of your site, the more money you can make from link selling. If you don’t already have a site with high domain authority, you can easily buy an expired domain which already has a high domain authority and start selling links this way.

13. Link Selling Broker

If you don’t have your own sites or don’t want to sell links on your own sites, then you can make money online by selling links on other people’s sites. Basically, you can find a network of site owners that are happy to add links to their site for a certain price and then you need to find people who are happy to buy links for a price that is high enough that you make enough profit for it to be worthwhile.

✭✭✭  Start by contacting site owners that may want to sell links on their sites. Most people do not make this clear on their website, but they usually have an email or contact form for you to contact them. To find people who want to buy links, you can look in forums or ask site owners for their contacts. You may have to pay for this.

14. Become a Micro Worker

A micro worker is basically someone who does very small, quick tasks for small amounts of money. The tasks can add up to a decent amount though. Example tasks might be tweeting a link, liking a post in Facebook or writing a quick review. Some good sites to try are Microworkers. You can read more about being a micro worker here.

✭✭✭  Look for jobs that can only be completed by Australians. These usually earn far more money than the average job.

15. Coaching

Think about whatever you do well and become a coach in this area. It could be blogging, life skills, working online or anything else. You can offer email or Skype coaching. The typical way it works is to offer a package over a certain length of time and involves a certain amount of contact. For example, over one month you will have 2 x 1 hour phone calls plus unlimited email questions.

✭✭✭  The best way to become a coach is to show that you are an authority in the subject matter. Starting a blog can be a great way to do this.

16. Sell Photos

If you take a good shot then selling photos can be a great way of how to make money online. There are many websites that will buy your photos quickly and easily such as Shutterstock. They do need to be high quality and payment is usually a commission of any money that is made from your photos.

✭✭✭  Research what types of photos make the most money and are in the most demand before starting to take photos to sell.

17. Write an App

In the current market, apps are huge business, and although many apps are available for download on smartphones and computers, there is always a demand for more. The great thing about using this method of making money is that you don’t actually need to be an expert in app creation – you simply need to have a good idea. The best way to do this is to survey the market. Ask your friends, family members and anyone else you can think of what they had an app for. Do some research and see if you can come up with an idea. If you can’t write an app yourself this doesn’t have to be a problem – just outsource the creation via a tool such as Upwork or Fiverr.

✭✭✭  Ensure you have a marketing plan for your app before getting started. There is no point creating the best app in the world if no one knows about it.

18. Sell Wikipedia Links

This might be a controversial one, but there are lots of businesses and sites out there that would love a link on Wikipedia, and it is not that hard to get one with a bit of know how and work. However, not many people have the knowledge or the time to do this and would be happy to outsource. You could advertise this service on sites such as Upwork.

✭✭✭  Start by checking out Matthew Woodward’s guide to getting Wikipedia links.

19. Write and Sell eBooks

If you can write, then writing and selling eBooks could be a good path for you to take to earn money online. It is easy to write an eBook and there is lots of software available to help you format it and many avenues for you to sell it on such as Amazon. However, this is also an area where you should have a clear marketing plan as there are many eBooks out there and you don’t want yours to be lost amongst millions. Conversely, you could also contract yourself out to other people to write theirs.

✭✭✭  If you have specialist knowledge in area but no established platform to market your eBook from, you could approach established sites which already have an audience base and ask them to sell it on their site in return for a cut of the profits.

20. Become a Social Media Expert

There are so many companies trying to harness the power of social media for profit. If you can become an expert in even one of the various social media forums, you can then freelance or work as an expert in that field, helping companies grow their return of investment in such forums in a consultant role.

✭✭✭  Show you are an expert by having your own account with many followers and great interaction.

21. Be a Social Media Manager

More and more companies are hiring social media managers and many of these jobs can be completed fully online. To be a social media manager, you will need to be proficient in using one or more forms of social media and show that you can manage a companies social media accounts to grow interaction, brand awareness and sales.

✭✭✭  Like above, show your skills by having your own popular accounts.

22. Upload engaging YouTube Videos

YouTube can be a great platform for making money, and not just by using advertisements in your videos. There are really 3 main ways of earning money via YouTube. The first, most obviously, is to monetise your videos via Google Adsense where you earn money from every viewer that clicks on an advertisement or watches one on your videos. You need lots of views to make money online this way. The second way is to work with sponsors, but again you’ll need enough views for this to work. The third, and my favourite way, is to create videos targeted towards marketing affiliate links – so creating a video titled “Top Books of 2021” and inserting your affiliate links within the video. This means that you need to research what type of videos will work best for you, as well as what people are searching for, and then choose an affiliate program to get you started.

✭✭✭  Need some inspiration? Read about this anonymous toy reviewer who is estimated to earn well over 7 figures on YouTube.

23. Matched Betting

Matched betting is the process of basically betting against yourself so that whatever outcome occurs, you win. For example, you might place a bet that horse 2 wins a race. You also bet that any horse BUT horse 2 wins the race. If you are able to place these bets spending less money that what you can win whichever outcome occurs, then you are always going to end up ahead. This is how matched betting works. There are lots of online betting services which can help you with this. A positive on this approach to money making is that you will not have to pay tax on any earnings either.

✭✭✭  Check out Betfair as they can be the best provider for betting for any outcome you want. Also look out for sign up specials with online bookmakers. Often you can get a couple of hundred dollars to start betting with them meaning you will make even more profit from your matched betting.

24. Watch Videos

Believe it or not but Swagbucks will actually pay you for watching videos. Before you get too excited, the money is very low. If you are good at multi tasking and just want some extra money without working hard, then this could be for you. You can also make money online by doing surveys and using their search tool among other things.

✭✭✭  Sign up for multiple sites which offer the same services to maximise your chance of making money.

25. Bookkeeping

If you have the skills to be a bookkeeper, this is a job which is transferable to working online. Some bookkeepers are lucky enough to be able to transfer their current job online, but you can also look for bookkeeping jobs which are specifically for working online. Job websites and freelancing websites are a good place to start looking for work.

✭✭✭  Working for an Australian company can be the best way to get a decent wage as an online bookkeeper. Contact local companies and ask if they have any work for you.

26. Sponsored Posts Online Advertising

Another way to make money online is to show advertisements either on a site or on social media. There are several ways to earn money from advertisements. You can be paid for every impression of the advertisement which is basically how many people see the ad. An alternative is that you can also get paid for how many people click on it. Other agreements are a payment based on a length of time the advertisement will be displayed. For example, $500 for 6 months. You may also chose to display advertisements where you earn money if the people click on it and then buy something as per affiliate marketing up above.

You will need a website with a fair amount of traffic or an engaged social media audience before you can generally make money from advertising.

✭✭✭  The quickest way to get started with earning money from advertisements is to use Google AdSense on your site. This can be an easy way to trial advertisements. However, you can usually make more money by sourcing advertisements directly.

27. Become a PR Representative

If you are already a PR Representative then this is a job you can transition to do at home by either making the transition with your current employer or by starting to freelance or find your own clients. If you are not, you will need to be an excellent communicator as well as great at marketing and persuading people.

A PR representative job can be tough to do fully online – usually you will need to meet with clients and go to events and speak to many different people. However, as the internet continues to grow into one of the most important aspects of a publicity campaign, some PR jobs do involve working fully online to outreach to people like bloggers.

✭✭✭  If you don’t have industry experience, start by volunteering to do publicity for events.

28. Be an Online Accountant

If you already have accounting skills then working online as an accountant can be a natural progression. If you can not work for your current employer online, you can look at freelancing or finding a new employer which is happy to give you this flexibility. Read more in our guide.

✭✭✭  Start by listing your services on online freelancing sites or various online platforms such as LinkedIn or Facebook. Check out job sites and ask your current network of contacts if they know of any online accounting work.

29. Become a Blogger

If you like to write and have a passion or an interest that others’ share, then a blog can not only be a great creative outlet, but a way to work online. Bloggers can make money many different ways – from advertising to affiliate marketing to link selling to using it as a base to offer other goods and services, such as selling eBooks or offering a coaching or writing service. A blog can be your business in itself or it may just be the platform that you use to help sell your service. Either way this can be a profitable endeavor if you go into it with the right mindset and a plan to monetise.

✭✭✭  Think outside of the square when it comes to monetising your blog. You do not have to take the more traditional route of advertising and affiliate marketing. You can use it to launch any type of product or service.

30. Typing

Typing is another area in which you can make money online. Sometimes, you will need to be able to receive paper documents in the mail but usually scanned images will be emailed to you for you to type up. You can find jobs using job search engines and freelancing sites. Keep in mind that this can be a competitive area to find work for reasonable pay as the skill level is quite low and repetitive typing may not be for everyone. The upside is online income with a flexible work schedule as long as you provide responsible service within the assigned timeframe.

✭✭✭  If you need to improve your typing speed there are a lot of free online tools such as keybr.com.

Keyboard for typing jobs

31. Become a Transcriptionist

This is similar to typing but it is more common to find work doing this online and there can be better salaries if you are trained in a specialised area. Many people are looking for a transcriptionist for audio and video files. A freelancing site, such as Upwork, can be the best place to start.

✭✭✭  There is better money in areas such as medical transcription. There are plenty of online courses that can train you in this area and the time and money invested will lead to better paid jobs.

32. Be a SEO Consultant

Do you know all about Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and think you could help others rank their sites to the top of Google? If this is the case then becoming a SEO consultant can be a lucrative career path. As more and more businesses realise how important top Google results are this area is only growing.

✭✭✭  To land clients, you will need to show them what you can do. Create some case studies from your own sites or volunteer to rank a local business for free so that you can prove what you are capable of. You don’t need to be in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, etc. for this to work.  Every local Aussie business needs this service so they can be found online.  You can make decent money and create a lucrative business just by learning this specialised skill.

33. Design Infographics

Infographics are like diagrams with text and images to tell some type of story/give advice/explanation. You can find many examples on visual.ly. They are becoming more and more popular especially as Pinterest grows as an excellent source of internet traffic. It is possible to make good money designing infographics. You can advertise your services and find work on freelancing sites. If you have no graphic design experience, try Udemy for low cost digital courses to get leveled up.

✭✭✭  Create a portfolio before pitching for jobs. You could make up some topics or volunteer to make infographics for an organisation that you would like to work for.

34. Utilise Social Investment Networks

If you have ever dreamed about being a day trader but don’t want to spend the time or money on the best advice, then a social investment network such as eToro could be for you. It has a simple, easy to use interface for trading online. What makes this a great platform to earn money for people without a lot of experience in trading is that you are able to see what other traders are doing and set it up to copy their trades automatically. You can learn from their trades or (hopefully) make money by copying them.

Obviously this comes with an element of risk, but it is perhaps less risky than just going it alone.

✭✭✭  If you want to copy successful traders, research and choose ten different traders to copy who make different types of trades to limit the possibility of you losing money.

35. Sell your own Music

If you like to belt out a tune and write your own music, there are many online business sites where you can sell it, such as on Bandcamp which will just take a 15% cut of any sales you make. It doesn’t have to be too difficult either. So long as you can put together a few chords, you’ll be able to market and sell your music.  someone who

✭✭✭  Create a portfolio of work before starting to look for jobs. You could volunteer to make a jingle for free for a company in return for a testimonial as well.

37. Edit Videos

If you are handy with video editing software, you can edit others’ videos for profit. You can do things like edit out useless parts of webinars, change the screen size, blur faces, add special effects, music, just about anything. Check out freelancing websites to find jobs. Editing videos is also one of those areas where you don’t need to have a huge amount of knowledge as you can learn as you go.

38. Online Tutoring

If you’ve got a skill, there’s always someone who wants to learn. Online tutoring is the way to go about using this skill to your advantage. You can teach people how to annunciate your accent or how to sing opera… basically anything you have a skill in.

✭✭✭  You can get started right now on InstaEDU or list your services on TutorFinder. You can also find opportunities through forums like Fiverr.

39. Write Speeches

If you enjoy writing, how about earning money through speech writing? These days there are jobs for many types of speech writers so you can no doubt find an area that is perfect for you. If you have specialist knowledge or skill, you could write speeches about that. Perhaps you love weddings and could write the perfect wedding vows or best man speeches. There are lots of different opportunities.

✭✭✭  If you do not already have an existing portfolio, volunteer to write some speeches for free in return for testimonials.

40. Create Online Courses

If you have skills in a certain area, why not teach others via an online course? There are lots of software packages and tools to help make this as painless as possible and it can be relatively easy to create an online course. There are so many topics you could build your course around. It could be a specific course, like “how to use Facebook Advertising to drive targeted traffic to your blog” to more general topics, such as “how to build a successful website”.

✭✭✭  Don’t bother building an online course until you are sure there is an audience for it and you have a marketing plan for how you will market the course.

41. Build Websites

Many people want to build a website or a blog but are frightened by the technical side of setting up a site. However, it is really not hard or difficult and you do not need to have an IT degree to learn how to do this.  You can learn by reading one of many articles that you will find in Google. Then you can use sites such as Upwork to find clients.

✭✭✭  When you first start out, do jobs for cheap in return for good testimonials.

42. Create a Service to help other People work online

Start by looking at the other ways to make money online in this list and brainstorm what services people may need in these work areas and research if people would pay for them. For example, looking at number 1 freelance writing, what might someone doing this need? Perhaps they would like a service that would find work for them doing things like applying for jobs on freelancing sites. Find a way to contact freelance writers and ask them if this is a service they would use and how much they would be willing to pay and then you can determine if it is worthwhile or not.

✭✭✭  Do not rush over the research stage. It is not worth putting the time and effort into building a service to find out there is no market for it.

43. Do Social Bookmarking

Social bookmarking is becoming an increasingly popular way to market websites and articles and people are willing to pay to have someone else social bookmark their pages with good, established accounts. Fiverr can be a good place to advertise this service as well as looking at the usual online freelancing sites.

✭✭✭  Research the most popular and best social bookmarking sites and start up active accounts before advertising your services. Be specific about exactly what you will do.

44. Record Voice Overs

Have you ever been told that you sound like a celebrity? Can you do funny voices and impersonations? If you have the voice for it, there are opportunities to make money online by recording voice overs. You can also get more creative with this such as providing songs, animal sounds and beat boxing. Freelancing websites are the best place to start for these types of opportunities, and you could save time by prerecording your best sounds.

✭✭✭  To get some creative ideas, check out what services people are already offering in this space on Fiverr.

45. Be a Proofreader

If you have fantastic English grammar and spelling, why not work as a proofreader? There are many people who want their work proofread and edited online, especially if English isn’t their first language. Many university students also want their work proofread or feedback on how to write an academic essay or thesis, so if you have knowledge on these topics as well there is also the opportunity to work in this area. You can also help people with their resumes and cover letters for job hunting.

✭✭✭  If you are going to offer services across a variety of proofreading areas as discussed here, it could be worthwhile to set up your own site which details exactly what services you offer with testimonials from past clients. This can be a very powerful tool when pitching for work.

spanish to english translation work

46. Translate Text and Speech

If you are fluent in more than one language then you should take advantage of this skill as Google Translate can only go so far. There are a lot of opportunities for people who can translate text and speech and many are online. Jobs do exist in traditional job search sites for this or you can set up a profile and start immediately on freelancing websites or one of the many sites that provide work specifically for translators.

✭✭✭  If you take the freelancing option, start by looking for small jobs and pricing yourself low so that you can build up a profile with good ratings and experience before tackling the more competitive (and lucrative) jobs.

47. Buy and sell Domain Names

It is possible to make a living out of buying and selling domain names. There are a couple of ways to go about this. You can buy domain names which are currently available that you imagine people will pay big bucks for in future. For example, a domain name with great words in it or a company that is only in Australia at the moment but you imagine they will go global and want the “.com” version of their name or the “.co.uk” etc.

You also buy quality expired domains and resell these. Expired domains are domains which were registered but are not anymore. These domains usually still have links pointing at them which is quite powerful and many people want to buy domains that already have a good link profile. It is possible to buy these domains for the usual cost of registering a domain and then resell them for a lot more.

✭✭✭  Check out ExpiredDomains.net for a list of some of the recently expired domains.

48. Become an Online User Tester

Many website owners want regular users to test their websites. What this usually means is that you will need to do a few operations on a site as instructed. For example, sign up for an account or perform a certain action. Usually this will be filmed and while you are doing it, you should describe what you are thinking, how easy or hard it is for you to work it out, anything that is confusing etc. You may also need to give written feedback. There are sites which are specifically set up to find people for user testing, although these often have more people wanting to do user testing than there are jobs. This means that you can be better off finding your own work through freelancing sites.

✭✭✭  Record a demo of you trying to perform certain actions on an existing website to show potential clients what they will get in return for their money. Testing Products is another alternative you can check out by signing up at a few paid survey sites.  If you meet the criteria they are looking for, they will also include you in various market research product tests.

49. Do Internet Research

For those looking for a simple job requiring little experience, a job in internet research is another option. Your service is offered to conduct research on topics to provide relevant information for articles, destinations and other services. It can be especially worthwhile to offer internet research in areas that you are already an expert as this can cut down the time it takes you to do something dramatically. That is why this is a great option for both experts and those with little experience.

✭✭✭  Find clients on freelancing sites. There are also sites which will pay you to answer questions. These are particularly worthwhile if you can answer questions on a topic where you are already an expert.

50. Be inspired at Fiverr

If you have made it all the way through this list but you STILL don’t feel inspired or like anything is quite right for you and your skillset, check out Fiverr. There are a crazy amount of different jobs on there that people will do for $5. You could add a profile and do one of these jobs for $5 – or more as most workers on there only seem to do the very basics for $5. Or you could use the inspiration you get to find work in that area elsewhere.

✭✭✭  You can make a profile and list work that you will do for $5 on this site and then outsource the actual work for a price where you will still make enough profit for it to be worthwhile.

Hi I have been an affiliate member for over 6 years I would like to know how I can turn my website into a lucrative business. The antiaging and natural products do work. Mum was told she needed two knee replacements mum refused to have surgery so I got her started on these products and she was completely cured. The body actually absorb these supplements and they actually reach the cells . Has done wonders to my skin and eliminates wrinkles. I value your advise. Kind Regards Maria

My Sister came back from Hing Kong a couple of years ago with some dresses she bought there cheap. She didn’t them so sold them on EBay. The penny dropped (pardon the pun) and she now makes around $200k a year selling on EBay. You would not believe the things she makes money with – often the weirder the better…
